The minimalist set design for Austin Shakespeare’s U.S. premiere of Jane Eyre features a skeletal wooden framework reminiscent of a jungle gym. Hovering above the set are tulle dresses, their ethereal forms drifting on a mobile to evoke the spirits of young women, such as Helen Burns, whose freedoms were denied. An elongated tulle dress, embodying the bride in the attic, becomes a haunting presence, enhanced by lighting effects that make the dresses appear and vanish. This evocative design underscores the production’s themes of repression and liberation, seamlessly blending with the fluid, expressive movement on stage.
